Massachusetts Minimum Tire Depth

In Massachusetts the minimum tire thread depth is 2/32 inches. Tires must have at least 2/32 inches of tread depth in the proper grooves, and no fabric breaks or exposed cords. Tires should be tested in various locations and in between different treads around each tire.

How to Check Your Tire’s Tread Depth

The best way to check tire depth is by using a tread depth gauge. If you don’t have a gauge, you can use a penny. Place a penny into several tread grooves across the tire. If part of Lincoln's head is always covered by the tread, you have more than 2/32" of tread depth remaining.

Will My Tires Pass Inspection?

Tires are worn out when they have worn down to 2/32" of remaining tread depth. Your car will not pass a state inspection.
