The air conditioners in our cars are no longer mere luxury items or status symbols; they have evolved into being essential parts of our cars, so is your A/C up to the task of keeping you cool now that summer has well and truly arrived? If it is, good, but do you know how to keep it working throughout the hot season?
It may be true that there are few user-serviceable components in an automotive A/C system, but the good news is that you don’t have to be a master technician to keep the system working.
All you need to do is follow the simple tips outlined below to keep your cool this summer. Here is how…
One of the most effective ways to keep your A/C system working properly is to use it as much as you can, or at least for 10-15 minutes once a week, it you can’t use it all the time. If the compressor sits idle for extended periods of time, the lubricant that is injected as part of the refrigerant charge, separates from the refrigerant gas, meaning that the moving parts of the compressor is deprived of lubrication when you turn the system on after a long period of non-use.
By operating the system at least once a week, the lubricating oil is distributed throughout the compressor, which goes a long way toward reducing mechanical wear. In most cases of damage caused by lack of lubrication, the compressor cannot be repaired, and replacement is the only reliable remedy.
The filter inside the cabin has a finite service life, and it must be replaced on a regular basis to keep the system functioning at its peak. Clogged cabin filters can seriously reduce, or even prevent airflow through the system. Reduced airflow won’t always trigger a warning light, so if the system is not working as it should, check the cabin filter, and replace it if it looks dirty, clogged, or damaged in any way.
Even in systems that are in perfect condition, up to 10% of the refrigerant charge can escape through minute leaks, and even the rubber of the hoses in less than a year. Most systems require an exact amount of refrigerant to work efficiently, and in most cases, a loss of just a few percent of the refrigerant charge can seriously affect the working of the system.
Common symptoms of a marginally under charged system is a reduced cooling effect, erratic cycling of the system, and even damage to the compressor and other components. Keeping the system fully charged is a sure-fire way to keep everything lubricated and working properly, and it does not cost an arm and a leg either.
Bear in mind that you will need the A/C system again next summer, so don’t forget about it during the coming winter. If you run the system at least once week, even in the depths of winter, you will ensure that the compressor remains lubricated, which can save you a ton of money when summer rolls around again.
